Summertime is one of the busiest times of year for a car wash. People get out more in the nice weather and they want a sparkling clean car to drive around in. That may occasionally mean taking on some extra help. Here are 5 tips for bringing on temp workers during the summer.
#1 Make Sure Applicants Know It’s Temporary
You don’t want to hire someone for 2-3 months but give the impression that the job could be permanent. If you decide to offer a full-time position at the end of the summer, that’s fine. However, you don’t want to dangle a carrot that may or may not actually exist.
#2 Expect Vacation Requests
Summer is also the time people travel, so your workers may already have plans before you even hire them. Make sure you are clear on your policy for requesting time off, especially since you are bringing on this employee to deal with the extra volume. You didn’t hire additional employees to spend summer still shorthanded.
#3 Expect to Hire Teens
Most people looking for temp summer work are high school kids who want to make a little money while they are off from school. This means understanding child labor laws well since minors are not allowed to perform certain tasks and may have schedule restrictions your other employees don’t have to adhere to.
#4 Have a Well-Documented Dress Code
If you don’t want employees wearing tank tops, flip-flops, miniskirts, and other revealing summer clothing, you’re going to have to make it a part of the employee handbook. Be prepared to enforce your rules with escalating penalties.
#5 Beware of Summer Flu
If you’ve never heard of this illness, that’s because it isn’t real. It’s just code for calling in sick on a really nice summer day when you have “something better to do” than show up for your temp job. One way to keep this from happening is to require a note from a doctor when an employee misses work.
